 Autumn Thunder Minimize

Try a Driver’s Education Event if you have never been

Our region will host a driver’s education event this coming October 13th and 14th at the highly regarded Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. This fine track is less than 3 hours from the greater Cincinnati area, and less than 1 hour from the greater Columbus area.

This Annual Autumn Thunder Drivers Education Course provides drivers with an exciting weekend activity where safety and fun are the most important rules. If you have never driven a road course in your Porsche or other type of vehicle, it is an exhilarating experience.

You will drive this course with one of our many talented instructors.

First timers: There will be two classroom sessions over the weekend which will help you understand the course, your car and performance driving. The first driving session will be without helmets. Your instructor will drive the first two laps at a moderate speed showing you the corner worker’s locations, the proper driving line around the track and a brief demonstration of your car’s braking capabilities. Then you pull into the pits and swap places in your car. This is where the real fun begins. You will slowly become more familiar with the track and your car’s performance and handling attributes. During subsequent run sessions on Saturday and Sunday, you will improve your driving and knowledge of the track. At some point on Sunday your instructor will probably allow you to solo on one of the most famous road courses in the United States!!  Please remember safety is our number one priority and you will drive to your own safe limits which greatly improve over the weekend.

To help you learn the track we will host a track walk Saturday afternoon led by our illustrious Jerry wolf and Jim Briggs !!!!!

You do not need to do anything to your car for this event. You do not need a helmet as our region has many loaner helmets. All you need are long sleeved shirts, closed toe shoes and we guarantee you will go home with a huge smile on your face.

An added bonus is the free Friday night pizza party where you will meet your instructor and the other wonderful people who keep coming back to this event.

Still not sure? Try our Taste of the Track program which allows you to drive the first run session only and attend a classroom session. After driving the first session, if you want to complete the weekend, just pay the difference of a normal registration.

Many of your friends in the Ohio Valley Region have done these driver education events and can tell you more. To register go to Club Registration at the following link:         www.clubregistration.net/

Past drivers, don’t miss out …register soon…you know you want to be there!!!!!!

 Fine Wine & Fabulous Cars

The 2012 OVR Annual Charity Wine Tasting and Auction March 31th , 7:00 PM at Zakira's Garage

It will be hard to top last year's wine tasting event held among a great collection of cars, however we are working hard to.  If you were there you will most certainly remember what a great night it was.  If you weren't, you will want to make sure you attend the next time we host the wine tasting event at Tom Stegman's garage!  Jerry Wolf went out in a blaze of glory with that event and set the bar high for me.  I have been appointed Winemeister this year and am honored to host another fabulous OVR charity wine tasting.  In keeping with the garage theme, this year we will be at Zakira's Garage, 6219 Wooster Pike, Cincinnati, Ohio 45227.  Zakira's restores, races and maintains vintage automobiles.  It is a fabulous setting with a rich history and perfect for experiencing wine that has aged gracefully.

Once again, we will be selecting and tasting some outstanding wines and will have several items up for auction.  Attendance is limited so be sure and register in advance on CLUBREGISTRATION.NET.

See you on March 31st for a fun filled evening with some outstanding cars and many fine wines!

Your new Winemeister,  Grant Karnes

Howard Rapp Award Winner - 2011
Tom Griffith's 1965 Porsche 356 CoupeEach year the Howard Rapp Award is presented to the OVR member whose devotion to his car and the sport of ‘concours’ best typifies the spirit of the award’s namesake Howard Rapp. Traditionally, we use the car deemed “Best of Show” at the VW-Porsche Reunion to select our winner. I am pleased to announce that this year’s winner is Tom Griffiths and his beautiful ’65 356 C Coupe. Tom’s car stood out in a rather crowded field of nice cars at this year’s reunion. And Tom’s attitude toward the care and feeding of his ride was immediately apparent to those listening to his story.

Tom purchased the Coupe seven years ago in September, 2004. He bought it from a dealer in Costa Mesa, California and had it shipped back to Cincinnati. It was basically a “driver” when he bought it. Tom reports that the car was in decent shape, but in need of some care. Shortly after buying the car Tom was introduced to Dick Weiss. Over the years, Tom credits Dick with helping him to bring the car up from a “driver” to a “really nice driver”. The biggest improvement being an engine rebuild. The engine rebuild was required after the crank-shaft broke coming back from Colorado in 2006. The next big project was a new paint job in 2010. This was done by Bob Bennett in Eaton, Ohio. Bob took the car down to bare metal, corrected some questionable previous body work and repainted it. There were also some electrical issues this past year, but those are resolved now and Tom is enjoying the car every chance he gets!

The Rapp Award was presented to Tom at our annual Chili Party at Porsche of Kings Automall on January 21st, 2012.

Congratulations Tom!
